Mushamado 武者窓
Definition: Samurai window

A bay window on the ground level of a castle, built with heavy vertical lattices. They allowed the samurai standing guard to monitor the passing traffic and disguised the inside to passersby.

Built in the Edo period between 1608 and 1868. Still visible today in Kyoto and Kanazawa, as well as on the Prinsengracht.
