Glossary – Hana-akari window 花明窓

Hana-akarimado
Definition: flower-hanging window.

A type of exposed-lath window found aside a wall of a decorative alcove. Adorned with a flower vase hung on a nail called asagaokugi 朝顔釘, hanging from the bamboo window base.

Found along the side walls of tea houses throughout Japan.
