This beauty is actually called Can Forteza Rey, found in the heart of the city of Palma. An entire building in the style of Art Nouveau meets Modernism. Built by Luis Forteza Rey in 1909 as a family home, it is five floors and, in the middle, was a dentist studio for his son in law.
Rey was inspired by Gaudí’s work in Barcelona, full of motifs and symbols. There is simply too much to see, you really have to study it closely. Serpents with golden tongues, flowers, mosaic pieces on the façade, spectacular bay windows, horseshoe arches and shutters that shape into a typical Mallorcan style. A hideous face faces the street like a warning, with dragons and wings. The whole thing is a burst of yellows, greens, blues, and blacks – not a single part left unadorned.
My favorites were the black steel balconies shaped into triangles and hearts, in perfect contrast with the turquoise window frames, beige walls, and blue skies above. Pure harmony.
